Tanzania’s Mtwara Port will operate 24 hours a day to speed up and simplify procedures for cashew nut transportation during the 2021/22 trading season, according to a statement from the Cashewnut Board of Tanzania (CBT).
The Tanzanian Government Supports Raw Cashew Nut Transport
In addition to extending port operations, the government has allowed raw cashew nuts to be transported within 24 hours from approved cooperative unions and warehouses to the port during the new trading season, which started on October 1, 2021.
CBT Director General Francis Alfred shared in an interview that the government’s decision was aimed at improving the efficiency of cashew nut transportation from cooperative unions to the port, and then onward to international markets.

Mtwara Port Will Operate 24/7
“Mtwara Port will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Therefore, the government has also allowed raw cashew nuts to be transported to Mtwara Port, with procedures completed within 24 hours to match the port’s operations and improve export efficiency,” said Juma Kijavara, Mtwara Port Regional Manager.
He also said that at least 250,000 tons of raw cashew nuts were expected to be exported through the port during the 2021/2022 cashew season.
According to Kijavara, Mtwara Port was ready to handle the increased workload, especially after the completion of an expansion project. The project raised the port’s cargo handling capacity from 400,000 tons to 1 million tons per year.
He expressed hope that customers would soon begin submitting applications for customs clearance of raw cashew nuts for export to different markets around the world.
“A total of 184,656 tons of cashew nuts were transported through Mtwara Port during the 2019/2020 agricultural season,” he said.

Around 90% of Tanzania’s cashew-growing area is located in three regions: Mtwara, Lindi, and Pwani.
