Are Cashew Nut Kernels Toxic?
NO! The Cashew Nut Kernels themselves aren’t toxic, but they are surrounded by a shell. The raw cashew nuts (RCN) have 30% cashew kernels and 70% cashew shell. Normally, 1 ton of raw cashew nuts can process 250-300 kg of the kernel and 700-750 kg of the shell. The oil from The cashew shell contains 25% of this reddish-brown oil, industrially known as Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) which is a by-product of the roasting process from the cashew nuts industry.
Cashew Shells Are Toxic
Cashew Shells Are Toxic By Their Oil! Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) composed of anacardic acids (60–70 %), cardols (10–20 %), cardanols (3–10 %), 2-methylcardols (2–5 %), and other minor constituents. Cashews themselves aren’t toxic, but they are surrounded by a shell that consists of the toxic oil urushiol. The National Institute of Health warns that the urushiol in cashew nuts can cause contact dermatitis. Coming into contact with urushiol can cause itching, blisters, and skin rashes. The good news is that the toxins can be eliminated by roasting the cashews. Because raw cashews are processed in such a careful and meticulous way, it’s rare that someone will accidentally consume a contaminated nut and develop dermatitis.
CNSL is extracted from cashew shells by cooking the broken cashew hard shells at high temperatures. Due to its high resistance to heat, CNSL is considered a versatile raw material with a wide range of applications such as surface coatings, paints, varnishes, polymer production, applications in ship paints, wood treatment, lacquer, as fuel, extracting antibacterial agents … Currently cashew nut shell oil is being extracted at cashew nut shell oil factories right in Vietnam and exported to many countries around the world.
Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) composed:
- Anacardic acids: ~ 70 %
- Cardols: ~ 20 %
- Cardanols: ~ 10%
- 2-methylcardol: ~ 5%
