The Canadian Department of Agriculture is extending financial support to the tune of $6 million to Entosystem Inc. This facility is set to enhance the production of sustainable products that rely on insects as a source of food for animals, particularly cattle.
Entosystem’s Innovative Approach to Raising Black Soldier Flies
Entosystem has developed a pioneering approach that streamlines each phase of the production life cycle. This allows for a quicker conversion of black soldier fly larvae into the final product while preserving high levels of nutrition and protein in these insects. Black soldier fly larvae are known for their ability to feed on organic waste, producing a high-quality, protein-rich material for animal feed. The significance of this project goes beyond mere innovation; it plays a pivotal role in promoting a more sustainable food system and elevating Entosystem’s reputation as a leader in leveraging insects as a valuable food source.
Government of Canada’s Drive to Reduce Food Waste
The Government of Canada is taking robust measures by investing in clean livestock facilities like those of Entosystem. Their objective is to support individuals and organizations committed to long-term investments in the commercial food supply chain and those who are willing to explore new methods to reduce, reuse, or eliminate food waste. Canadian Minister of Agriculture Marie-Claude Bibeau emphasized the environmental promise of using insects to expedite the composting of food waste. By reclaiming products that would otherwise end up in landfills, Entosystem is contributing to a zero-waste circular economy and aiding in the achievement of climate-related goals.
Generating Employment and Environmentally Friendly Agricultural Products
Canada’s financial backing of Entosystem’s new facilities will enable the company to increase its production of protein, offering an eco-friendly alternative to animal feed and fertilizer, which are essential inputs to the agricultural industry. In the new facility, Entosystem anticipates increasing its organic waste conversion capacity to 250 tons per day by 2024, a substantial jump from the current rate of 6 tons per day. Additionally, this expansion will result in the creation of nearly 70 new full-time jobs.
Ultimately, government investments in Entosystem will not only provide the necessary resources for the company to operate effectively but also contribute to reducing food waste, curbing landfill usage, and lowering greenhouse gas emissions through the proper disposal of organic waste. Every year, Canada discards more than half of its food supply, with nearly $50 billion of that waste being avoidable. By fostering more solutions to address food waste within the country, Canada can fortify its food system and support the transition to a more environmentally conscious economy.
