The scale of cashew plantations in Ratanakiri Province, Cambodia, has continued to expand this year and is expected to grow further next year, driven by rising demand from Vietnam for raw cashew nuts.
Cashew Cultivation Area in Ratanakiri Reaches 51,000 Hectares
The cashew growing area in Ratanakiri Province, Cambodia, reached 51,000 hectares in 2021, an increase of 4,000 to 6,000 hectares. At present, more than 10,000 hectares of cashew plantations in the province are already in the harvesting stage, with an average yield of around 1 ton per hectare.
According to Soy Sona, Director of the Ratanakiri Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, who spoke to local media on December 28, 2021, the province’s cashew cultivation area has exceeded the original growth target by about 4,000 to 6,000 hectares. Cambodian farmers are also planting newer, higher-yield cashew varieties to increase production and meet the growing demand for raw cashew nuts in the future.
Currently, Cambodia has more than 500,000 hectares of cashew plantations across 10 specialized cashew-growing provinces. The four provinces with the largest cashew cultivation areas are Kampong Thom with around 90,959 hectares, Kratie with around 47,858 hectares, Ratanakiri with around 30,459 hectares, and Kampong Cham with around 24,364 hectares.

Vietnam Needs More Than 1 Million Tons of Raw Cashew Nuts Each Year
Imported raw materials account for about 70% of Vietnam’s cashew processing volume, highlighting concerns about the limited capacity of small-scale production facilities and the impact this may have on product quality. Vietnam needs more than 1 million tons of raw cashew nuts for processing every year, and demand continues to rise.
Since domestic supply is only around 300,000 tons, the remaining volume must be imported, mainly from West Africa. As one industry view notes: “If we can produce more raw cashew nuts domestically, it will not only support the cashew industry but also create more jobs and income for farmers.”
85% of Cambodia’s Raw Cashew Nuts Are Exported to Vietnam
Around 80–85% of Cambodia’s raw cashew production is exported to Vietnam for processing into finished cashew kernels. Vietnam is currently Cambodia’s largest trading partner in the cashew industry.
According to information from Cambodia’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), the Vietnam Cashew Association has agreed to increase purchases of Cambodian cashew nuts. Hean Vanhan, a senior official from MAFF, said Vietnam has agreed and planned to buy more raw cashew nuts from Cambodia. At the same time, Vietnam also supports the development of cashew processing factories in Cambodia.
