HRD Industries, an Indian company specializing in the processing of agricultural products, plans to turn cashew nut shells into oil and biochar at the Glo-Djigbé-Zè Industrial Zone (GDIZ-Zè) in Benin.
Construction of the plant was expected to begin in September 2022. The project was announced on February 16, 2022, by officials from Glo-Djigbé-Zè, an industrial zone developed in Benin by Société d’Investissement et de Promotion de l’Industrie-Bénin (SIPI-Bénin).

The project is part of a partnership between Arise Integrated Industrial Platforms (Arise IIP) and the Republic of Benin.
HRD Industries plans to build a new factory that will produce oil and biochar from cashew processing waste. The company aims to extract cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) from cashew shells.
According to the project plan, the plant is expected to produce around 50,000 liters of cashew shell oil and 45,000 tons of biochar per year.
HRD Industries estimates that the full construction project will require an investment of about 7 billion CFA francs, equivalent to nearly 10 million euros. With this project, HRD Industries would become the 25th company to invest in the Glo-Djigbé-Zè Industrial Zone (GDIZ-Zè).
The Cashew Shell Oil Plant Will Be Located in Glo-Djigbé-Zè, Benin
The subsidiary of the Indian multinational HRD Group will collect cashew shells in Glo-Djigbé-Zè and use them as raw materials for producing cashew shell oil and biochar.
Benin is one of Africa’s important cashew-producing countries. In 2019, the country harvested more than 100,000 tons of raw cashew nuts. Most of Benin’s raw cashews have traditionally been exported to markets such as India and Vietnam.
This project could help Benin add more value to its cashew industry by processing cashew by-products locally instead of treating them as waste. Cashew shells can be used to produce industrial oil, while the remaining biomass can be turned into biochar, a material that may be used as fuel, soil amendment, or industrial input depending on processing standards.
