5 Cashew-Growing Regions in Tanzania Plan to Increase Production

Representatives from five major cashew-growing regions in Tanzania recently shared their production strategies during a stakeholder meeting. The five key cashew-growing regions in Tanzania are Mtwara, Lindi, Ruvuma, Coast, and Tanga.

The Tanzanian government is now planning to increase cashew production over the next five years through several key solutions, including:

  1. Expanding agricultural land for cashew cultivation
  2. Using improved cashew seed varieties
  3. Applying modern farming techniques and agricultural technologies

The Tanzanian government has directed the cashew sector to increase the country’s raw cashew nut production from about 300,000 tons per year to 700,000 tons per year by 2025.

Expanding Agricultural Land for Cashew Cultivation

Speaking at the event, Mtwara Region representative Ally Lichenje said the region currently has about 21 million cashew trees.

Mtwara has been working to increase its cashew production from 118,574 tons in the 2020/21 season to 125,819 tons in the 2021/22 season. This growth has been supported by the expansion of cashew-growing areas in the region.

According to Lichenje, Mtwara Region will continue to apply new farming techniques, expand cultivated land, and plant improved cashew varieties to maintain its position as Tanzania’s leading raw cashew nut-producing region.

However, the government’s target to increase national raw cashew nut production from 300,000 tons to 700,000 tons by 2025 is a major challenge. Since Mtwara contributes around 60% of Tanzania’s total cashew output, the region would be expected to produce about 420,000 tons, which is a demanding goal for local authorities and farmers.

Using Improved Cashew Seed Varieties

The Tanzanian government is promoting both the expansion of cashew-growing land and the supply of agricultural inputs. At the same time, it is also strengthening the production and distribution of improved cashew seed varieties and encouraging farmers to replace old trees with new, higher-yielding varieties.

Mustapher Magembe, a representative from Lindi Region, said that in addition to the strategies mentioned above, the region will work closely with the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) – Naliendele to improve farmer education on modern cashew farming methods.

This includes training farmers on better planting techniques, orchard management, pest control, and the use of improved varieties suitable for local growing conditions.

Applying Modern Farming Techniques and Agricultural Technologies

A representative from Ruvuma Region, Onesmo Ngao, said the region produced 25,242.5 tons in the current season, exceeding the previous target of 25,000 tons. This achievement was supported by reliable access to agricultural inputs and better pest control measures.

The Tanzanian government said the region’s Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Union would receive support and equipment for quality inspection, grading training, replacement of old cashew trees with improved varieties, and investment promotion.

“The region needs 3,031 tons of powdered sulfur and 380,000 liters of liquid sulfur for the 2022/23 season. We are targeting production of 25,999 tons and will gradually increase it to 28,307 tons by the 2025/26 season,” said Onesmo Ngao.

Tanga Region agricultural officer Mery Faustine said the region plans to increase the number of cashew farmers through better-supported agricultural officers. This effort is expected to help expand the cashew production area from 35,000 acres in 2020/21 to 50,000 acres by 2025/26, partly by reviving abandoned farms.
