Pet Food Supplemented with Insect Protein

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), livestock production accounts for around 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. These emissions mainly come from methane, ammonia, and carbon dioxide released by livestock, manure, fertilizer used to grow feed crops, and decomposing waste.

In addition, the growing demand for fish meal and other marine-based protein sources has also raised concerns about pressure on ocean ecosystems. When large volumes of fish are harvested to produce feed ingredients, it can affect marine food chains and long-term biodiversity.

Another major issue is land use. Large areas of forest are often cleared to create grazing land or to grow crops for animal feed. This reduces the number of trees that can absorb carbon dioxide. When forests are cut down, stored carbon is released back into the atmosphere, adding more pressure to the climate.

For the feed and pet food industry, this makes insect protein an interesting option for companies that want to reduce their environmental footprint while still providing a nutritious protein source.

Still, one point should be handled carefully: insect protein should not be described as a perfect replacement for all traditional protein sources in every formula. Pet food must still meet the full nutritional needs of each animal species. For cats and dogs, the final formula matters more than the ingredient trend itself.
