Many studies around the world have explored the use of chitosan in wastewater treatment and have reported positive results. Today, chitosan-based water treatment solutions are trusted in many countries for reducing turbidity and removing unwanted contaminants from water.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to its natural origin and strong adsorption capacity, chitosan is also used in the restoration of polluted water sources such as hydropower reservoirs, stormwater canals, rivers, streams, and other contaminated water systems.<\/p>\n<h2>Chitosan for Water Treatment<\/h2>\n<p>Chitosan has excellent biosorption capacity. It can adsorb and remove many types of pollutants, synthetic compounds, and harmful substances from wastewater, including heavy metal ions, organochlorine pesticides, suspended solids, turbidity, organic oxidizing substances, fats and oils, textile dyes, BOD, COD, grease, phenol, phenolic compounds, and other contaminants through precipitation and coagulation reactions.<\/p>\n<p>Another important advantage is that chitosan does not contain acrylamide and is 100% biodegradable through enzymatic activity. As a result, after treatment, it does not cause long-term bioaccumulation in the environment.<\/p>\n<p>In Vietnam, chitosan is increasingly applied in environmental treatment, especially in the removal of heavy metals and organic compounds through coagulation in many heavy industries. In addition, it can also help recover rare metals and radioactive waste, making it valuable not only for environmental protection but also for economic recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Chitosan helps reduce turbidity in industrial wastewater by binding and flocculating organic compounds. After further processing steps such as drying and sterilization, recovered protein-rich materials may be reused as animal feed.
