Cambodia exported 213.41 tons of processed cashew nuts<\/strong> in the first quarter of 2022, an increase of more than 300%<\/strong> compared with the same period last year. Meanwhile, exports of raw cashew nuts fell by nearly 40%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

According to export data, processed cashew exports rose sharply by 311.83%<\/strong> year-on-year. China was the largest destination, importing 123.38 tons<\/strong>, followed by Thailand with 76 tons<\/strong>, Japan with 12.10 tons<\/strong>, and Taiwan with 1.93 tons<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Cambodia Gradually Reduces Raw Cashew Exports<\/h2>\n

At the same time, exports of raw cashew nuts<\/a><\/strong> declined. Cambodia exported 271,994.48 tons<\/strong> of raw cashew nuts in the first quarter of the year, down 39.67%<\/strong> from the same period last year.<\/p>\n

Vietnam remained the main market for Cambodia\u2019s raw cashew exports, receiving 271,980.90 tons<\/strong>. China imported only 13.58 tons<\/strong> during the same period.<\/p>\n

Uon Silot, President of the Cambodia Cashew Association (CAC)<\/strong>, said the increase in processed cashew exports was supported by cooperation between the association and small and medium-sized enterprises. He also noted that joint efforts with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Commerce helped attract foreign investment into cashew processing factories.<\/p>\n

He added that the association had asked the government to help coordinate business support and capital access for small and medium-sized enterprises involved in cashew cracking and processing in Cambodia.<\/p>\n

Silot also said that CAC members were drying cashew nuts for three companies that had placed orders. These included 4,000 tons<\/strong> for India\u2019s Ashapura cashew brand, with exports expected to begin in early May; 4,000 tons<\/strong> for Olam, a US-based online distributor, to be shipped to factories in Vietnam for packaging; and 2,000 tons<\/strong> ordered by the food group Intersnack for export to factories in Vietnam.<\/p>\n

He added that more companies had started placing additional orders, showing growing demand for Cambodia\u2019s processed cashew products.<\/p>\n

Cambodia\u2019s Private Sector Makes Progress in Cashew Processing<\/span><\/h2>\n

Lay Huot, owner of Chey Sambor, a small-scale cashew processing business based in Kampong Thom, said her company exported a total of around 50 tons of processed cashew nuts<\/strong> to Japanese importers last year. She said the Japanese buyers required strict quality standards.<\/p>\n

According to Lay Huot, her business has applied for Japanese certification, which would allow the company to export more processed cashew nuts to Japan compared with 2021.<\/p>\n

\u201cJapan is our business partner. In the past, we were able to export because we successfully met their quality standards. But this year, Japan requires us to have this certificate before we can export more,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She added that the Ministry of Agriculture has helped many businesses obtain certification to promote exports of processed cashew nuts instead of raw cashew nuts.<\/p>\n
