Plan to Introduce a New Cashew Variety<\/h2>\n

The Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute, through the TARI-Naliendele Centre<\/strong><\/em>, is planning to introduce a new cashew variety<\/strong> that can resist leaf blight and other cashew diseases.<\/p>\n

Dr. Fortunus Kapinga, Director of the TARI-Naliendele Centre<\/strong>, recently revealed that the new variety could be grown without the use of chemical pesticides<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cWe are in the final stage of introducing a new variety that can be grown and managed well without using chemical pesticides to control the disease.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

This development comes after complaints from cashew farmers in Tanzania<\/strong> about severe attacks of leaf blight disease on cashew trees. The disease has caused serious damage and significant yield losses in many cashew-growing areas.<\/p>\n

Changing Weather Increases the Risk of Cashew Disease<\/h2>\n

According to Dr. Kapinga<\/strong>, cashew disease in Tanzania is mainly linked to changing weather patterns, especially rainfall and humidity.<\/p>\n

He explained that recent cashew disease outbreaks in Tanzania have become more destructive than before. The disease can spread very quickly after rainfall, especially when humidity remains high.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the press, he said: \u201cIn the past, the disease appeared after rain, but now the wet conditions are causing greater damage to crop yields.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Tanzania\u2019s Cashew Harvest Has Been Badly Affected<\/h2>\n

Cashew farmers<\/strong> said that cashew production has been heavily affected by several pests and diseases, including leaf blight<\/strong>, leading to poor harvest results.<\/p>\n

Ms. Khadija Bakiri<\/strong>, an agricultural consultant in the Lindi Region<\/em>, said the region has been seriously affected by pests and diseases caused by climate change.<\/p>\n

She explained: \u201cThe Lindi Region has been heavily affected by pests and diseases, especially in cashew farming. Several diseases have limited cashew production in this area.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Ms. Bakiri also said the region had expected to harvest more than 100,000 tons of raw cashew nuts<\/strong> in the 2022\/2023 season. However, this target may not be achieved because pests and diseases have damaged the crop.<\/p>\n

In the 2021\/2022 season, the Lindi Region harvested more than 65,000 tons of raw cashew nuts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cIn the 2022\/2023 season, we do not expect to harvest less than the 65,000 tons of raw cashew nuts<\/a><\/strong> that we harvested in the previous 2021\/2022 season.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
